American Opera in the 20th century is darkly introspective. How to show that was the main challenge of this concept. My first sketch really nailed it, but I was intrigued by the whole idea of the dark interior of the soul that I just kept drawing. The following sketches show different approaches to the idea, and the last one was a lighter spot that I just loved and threw in.
